Old Brewery Mission: From an 1889 Soup Kitchen to Homelessness Prevention
What they do
The Old Brewery Mission works with people who are homeless or at risk of losing their home. Its approach has three parts: prevention, to keep people housed; emergency services, including shelter, Café Mission, outreach and a mobile clinic; and rehousing, to help people move into stable housing and stay there. It also runs dedicated services for women, and La Traversée, a program for seniors. Its 24/7 phone lines, one for men and one for women, are often the first point of contact.
Its 2025-2026 impact figures give a sense of the scale. Its emergency services helped 1,378 different people a month, Café Mission logged 117,289 visits, and 859 people were supported in housing. The Mission now counts 524 housing units across 23 service locations. On the prevention side, it handled 445 requests for help, and 185 people found a housing solution.
How it started
In the winter of 1889-90, two Montrealers, Mina Douglas and Eva Findlay, opened a soup kitchen. In 1891 it moved into the abandoned Williams Brewery building, the “Old Brewery” that gave the Mission its name. It became a shelter for men in the 1920s, moved to Clark Street in 1968, opened the Patricia Mackenzie Pavilion for women in 1998 and Café Mission in 2012. It created a prevention service in 2021, and in 2024 it ended dormitories in its emergency services.
Christmas has long been part of its story. In 1954, its Christmas dinner served a record 1,080 people.
Why it matters this December
This year, the Montreal Gazette’s Christmas Fund, which has helped Montrealers in need every holiday season since 1967 and has raised more than $27 million, is partnering with the Mission. All of the money it raises goes to homelessness prevention. That includes the Mission’s rent bank, which gives quick help to people and families going through a rough patch who risk losing their home. Since 2021, the Mission says, its prevention services have helped more than 700 people avoid the street.
It’s a simple idea: covering a gap in rent before an eviction is far easier, for everyone, than helping someone off the street in the middle of a Montreal winter.
