Best Kite flying in Montreal
it’s just plain fun!
We’re calling it… kite flying will be the next big trend to hit Montreal! Why? It’s easy to pick up (though challenging, but awesome, to truly master), you can go simple and inexpensive, elaborate and pricey, or even DIY, most kites are very transportable, but mostly… it’s just plain fun!

Want to get up in the air with this whimsical and unique hobby? Here are some of our favourite kite flying spots in Montreal:
1. Parc Jeanne-Mance
Located at the foot of Mount Royal along Avenue du Parc, Jeanne-Mance park was once a military training ground, meaning it has long been cleared of most of its trees.
This wide open space is home to volleyball courts in the summer as well as plenty of picnic goers and dog walkers. With its distinct lack of trees and position just above the skyline, Jeanne-Mance is ideal for city kite flying.

2. Parc La Fontaine
Like Parc Jeanne-Mance, Parc La Fontaine was also once used as a military training ground. Before that, it was an expansive farm area. All that to say, there remains today large open spaces free of trees or other obstacles.
Parc La Fontaine is the heart of the vibrant Plateau burrough and features two connected ponds with fountains, beautiful walking and biking paths and plenty of nearby restaurants and cafes. After a morning of kite flying, be sure to hit up La Banquise right nearby.

3. Mount Royal Park
The wide open spaces around Beaver Lake, as well as the open field adjacent to the George-Étienne Cartier Monument (bonus, Tam Tams!) are decent for kite flying, though you might encounter crowds on the weekend. The scenery and location can’t be beaten, so opt for some early morning kite flying to avoid tripping over picnickers.

4. Angrignon Park
Angrignon Park is one of the largest parks in Montreal, and although it is home to some gorgeously wooded areas, it also has large tracts of treeless fields and walking paths, giving you plenty of kite flying room.
As a bonus, Angrignon Park is one of the few city parks to have BBQ pits (BYO charcoal) for open air BBQs.

5. Parc René-Lévesque
Located along the Lachine Canal, Parc René-Lévesque is one big, looooong park with only sparse tree life and a few statues and artistic structures.
In fact, the art installations alone are a good enough reason to visit this unique, west end park. But for kite flyers, the long stretches of green space along the scenic water are just perfect.

BONUS: Saint-Honoré dans l’Vent Kite Festival
Saint-Honoré dans l’Vent Kite Festival
From June 16-18, this amazing festival will delight attendees with incredible kite displays for its 19th year in a row. This is the place to be for true kite enthusiasts, but there are also inflatable games for kids, fireworks, live music, kite making workshops and more!
Saint-Honoré is quite far outside the city, so we highly recommend making a whole weekend out of it. Luckily, the city is not far from the Saguenay River, so look into a scenic cottage rental and enjoy the relaxation!
