  • 5+ rides per week (regular bike): seasonal pass at $115 pays for itself within 4 weeks.
  • 5+ rides per week with e-bikes: the $189 seasonal e-bike pass beats the per-minute surcharge if your rides average >15 minutes.

The free 45-minute rule

Every BIXI pass includes free unlimited rides up to 45 minutes. Rides over 45 minutes are charged $5 per extra 30-min block. To avoid the fee, dock at any BIXI station to reset the clock, then re-undock immediately for a new 45-minute window. Stations are typically <500m apart in central Montreal.

The BIXI season — when can I ride?

BIXI Montreal operates from April 15 to November 15. In 2025 the city tested a small winter pilot in Outremont; full winter service is not yet available. For year-round biking, you need a personal bike + studded tires.

BIXI Montreal FAQ

How much is a BIXI Montreal seasonal pass in 2026?

The 2026 BIXI seasonal pass is $115. If purchased before March 1 during the early bird window, it drops to $99. The pass covers unlimited 45-minute rides on regular BIXI bikes from April to November.

Are BIXI e-bikes worth it?

E-bikes cost an extra $0.15/minute on top of any pass — about $3 for a 20-minute ride. If you use e-bikes more than 5 times a week, the $189 seasonal e-bike pass (no per-minute surcharge) saves money. For occasional e-bike riders, regular seasonal + pay-per-use is cheaper.

When does BIXI Montreal open and close for the season?

BIXI opens around April 15 and closes around November 15 each year, weather-dependent. Late November dates can be extended if temperatures stay above zero. A small winter pilot was tested in 2025 in Outremont and Plateau.

Is the first 45 minutes of every BIXI ride free?

Yes — every BIXI pass (seasonal, monthly, 24h) includes free unlimited rides up to 45 minutes. Rides over 45 minutes are charged $5 per 30-min extra block. Just dock and re-undock at any station to reset the timer.

Can I use BIXI with an OPUS card?

Not directly. BIXI and STM (OPUS) are separate systems. BIXI uses its own app and credit card billing. The STM monthly OPUS pass does not cover BIXI.

Where do I find BIXI stations in Montreal?

Use the official BIXI app (iOS / Android) or bixi.com. There are over 900 stations spanning Verdun, Saint-Léonard, Montréal-Nord, the Plateau, downtown, Outremont, Westmount, Côte-des-Neiges, LaSalle, and more. New stations are added every spring.

Is BIXI safe for beginners?

Montreal has 950+ km of bike paths and the BIXI fleet is well-maintained. Helmets are not provided but strongly recommended. Avoid Saint-Laurent and Sainte-Catherine during rush hour as a beginner. Côte-des-Neiges and the Lachine Canal path are safer first rides.
