Most Beautiful Peaks in Quebec

Gaspésie National Park (Parc national de la Gaspésie) sits in the heart of the Chic-Choc Mountains and contains the highest summits in southern Quebec. It’s a serious mountain destination — home to the famous Mont Albert, Mont Jacques-Cartier (1,268 m, the highest peak south of the Saint Lawrence), and the only herd of woodland caribou south of the Saint Lawrence. About 10 hours from Montreal by car, this is the place for a multi-day backcountry adventure.

Why Gaspésie

This is high alpine in Quebec — above the treeline, sweeping tundra, dramatic glacial cirques, and views over the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The park is part of the International Appalachian Trail. If you’ve done all the day-trip mountains around Montreal and want something bigger, this is it.

How to Get There from Montreal

Approximately 9–10 hours by car: Highway 20 East all the way past Rimouski, then Highway 132 along the Saint Lawrence to Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, then Route 299 South into the park. Many visitors fly to Mont-Joli or Gaspé and rent a car instead.

Top Hikes

  • Mont Albert summit loop (17 km, full day): The classic Gaspésie hike. Alpine plateau, glacial valley views. Difficult.
  • Mont Jacques-Cartier (8 km return): Highest peak. Caribou often seen at the summit. Open July–September only (caribou protection).
  • Mont Olivine (3 km): Shorter alternative with good views.
  • International Appalachian Trail sections: Multi-day backcountry options.

The Caribou

Gaspésie hosts the only woodland caribou herd in southern Quebec — about 50 animals. They’re often visible on Mont Albert and Mont Jacques-Cartier summits in summer. Stay on trails: this is a fragile alpine ecosystem.

Camping & Lodging

  • Gîte du Mont-Albert: Historic SÉPAQ lodge with restaurant and spa — ideal base.
  • Camping La Galène: Frontcountry sites near the visitor centre.
  • Refuges and backcountry camping on the longer trails.

Practical Information

  • Entry fee: ~$9.55 adult (2026). Free for kids under 17.
  • Best season: July–early September. The high summits hold snow into June.
  • Mont Jacques-Cartier shuttle: Mandatory shuttle from the parking lot to the trailhead (small fee).
  • Weather: Alpine conditions — pack for any weather including snow in summer.

What to Combine

  • Forillon National Park on the eastern tip of Gaspésie — coastal cliffs and seals.
  • Percé Rock and Île Bonaventure — iconic Quebec landmark + gannet colony.
  • The full Gaspé Peninsula coastal drive — one of Canada’s great road trips.
